While I've been to many of the places that we will visit over the course of our trip, I have not been to all of them. Furthermore, I've never been to them in the context of visiting multiple cites which were impacted by the Civil Rights Movement back to back.
All of the places that we are going to visit are important in their own right. I'm just glad to be able to experience it as a "pilgrimage." Of the places we are going to visit, there are two that I am extremely excited about. They are Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia and Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. I am excited to attend a church service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, as it will be a very powerful moment to worship in the same place that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr started his ministry. As an educator, I am eager to visit Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a child I saw the made for television movie, "The Ernest Green Story," and first learned about the cost of education from the perspective of "The Little Rock 9." Education is a large part of my life, and visiting Central High School will mean a lot to me. Through the courage of "The Little Rock 9" I've been able to stand on their shoulders, as they helped to pave the way for all of my academic and educational pursuits!
We're days away from leaving Champaign, IL, and I can't wait!
GET EXCITED!!!!!
