Economics

Today we spent the day in Greensboro, North Carolina.  It has been a wonderful day of learning.  We visited the International Civil Rights Center and Museum as well as the Greensboro Historical Society.  Both were filled with excellent information to digest.  A moment that has been on my mind all day was when our tour guide at the International Civil Rights Center challenged us to think about how these movements always had an economic impact.  This made me think about the actions that I take part in that further oppression.  I try think about where I am spending my money and if those places support what I support but his comments made me further think about this and want to become more aware and mindful of who I economically support.

The other moment that struck me was reading the exhibits at the Historical Society.  There were quotations on the walls from enslaved people describing their conditions.  I had to hold back the tears as I thought about them being starved, beaten and separated from their families.

Bringing these moments together makes me think about how we continue to support an economy that was built by enslaved people here in the US. Knowledge is power and continuing to educate myself is the only way for me to continue to be more a part of the solution than part of the problem.
